Westfield Downtown (2002)

You are who you are. As simplistic as that sounds, that basically describes my attitude towards my performance at Westfield Thursday night. When my wife asked me how I did I said “Okay for a fat guy”.

Okay by summer 2002 standards is 22:48 for 5K. I finished behind a lot of people I used to beat but that was then. Unlike July 4, the weather was as perfect as you could ever ask for on July 25. I was breathing way too hard to have only done a 7:14 first mile. The course was narrow but the start was reasonably fair. I slowed down a bit in a tougher second mile and hit the split at 14:45. I knew breaking 22:30 was probably out of the question so I focused on a couple of runners I knew who were just ahead of me. Try as I might my portliness was too much to overcome.

I did do a nice cooldown-3.5 miles home.
